Satin Finish

Satin finish, commonly called “No.4 finish stainless steel”, is a general-purpose matte polishing. Satin stainless steel has a diffuse finish, offering a soft shine. It is a non-directional and uniform mechanical finish with a satin aesthetic. With certain ambient reflectivity, it is available as flat metal sheets or for standard specification within projects.

The satin finish is a brushing process. Before further refinement, the metal surface is brushed with a layer of minute line to achieve this pleasing light diffusion without mottling.

The soft sheen and pleasant diffusion of satin finish mean it is also often chosen for signs, cladding systems, and sculptures. Whether using it for exteriors or interiors, it can impart a sense of comfort and high-end.

TOPSON strictly controls the quality of each step of stainless steel processing, including inspection of raw materials entry, product color analysis, T-bend test, impact test, salt-spray test, manual quality inspection, tensile test, and packaging testing on exported products, which ensures its integrated performance such as corrosion resistance, coating stickiness, etc.

Why Choose TOPSON for Satin Finishing

Satin finish stainless steel appears deep and bright in full sunlight. In the setting sun, it will glow purple and reddish silver. When the satin stainless steel is left outside on cloudy days, it looks like a pewter.

Its texture is non-directional and exudes a gentle matte glow. If stainless steel or other metals do not have a glossy surface, or if brushing is performed without using minute abrasives, the glossy will not be soft and refined.

Multiple Processing Methods

At TOPSON, the satin finish is one of the simplest brushed finish surfaces that can be obtained with a metal brush or sandpaper. It has a translucent and frosted-like appearance, giving the stainless steel an elegant shine. But the brushed finish is more susceptible to corrosion because their dents tend to store water stains, which will lead to corrosion.

To make it more suitable for exterior and interior decorations, TOPSON can apply an artificial layer of passivation coating on the metal surface to strengthen satin stainless steel’s properties and increase the finish’s service life. If you cooperate with TOPSON, we will be able to complete the delivery within 1-2 weeks.

Questions You Want to Know

Satin finish, commonly called “No.4 finish stainless steel”, is a general-purpose bright polishing with matte glossy. It is a non-directional and uniform mechanical finish with lower ambient reflectivity.

Satin stainless steel finish tends to hide fingerprints better than other metal finishes. With its versatility and subtlety, you can use it in any space to add a chic vibe.

Additionally, satin stainless steel is easier to clean than other metal textures, and the dirt does not stick as easily on its surface. Therefore, it is ideal for high-traffic areas like bathrooms and kitchens.

Satin finishes can be obtained with metal brushing, sandpaper, or other abrasive material. They use non-woven burring wheels. In processing, brushing is carried out by changing to finer-grained abrasives.

Steps of satin stainless steel finishing:

Step 1. Level the weld
Remove the weld by using a fiber disc with 60 grit.

Step 2. Clean the surface
Remove the dirt from the stainless steel surface. You can use soft cleaner and fiber cloth.

Step 3. Sanding out the defects
Adjust the processing method according to the area size that needs polishing—grinding order from front to back. The small area can be polished by using 60-120-particle grits abrasive. Polishing larger areas can use sandpaper and 120-240-particle grit abrasive.

Considerations:
Uniform pressure should be maintained during the polishing process to ensure the uniform surface of the finished product.

Satin stainless steel is a type of stainless steel that has a satin-like, brushed finish. It is also known as brushed stainless steel or matte stainless steel. With attractive appearance and durability, satin stainless steel plates are often used in architectural and decorative applications.

Some of the properties of satin stainless steel include:

1.Corrosion Resistance
Satin stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance, making it ideal for outdoor and marine applications. Its corrosion resistance is due to its composition and the way it is manufactured. In terms of composition, satin stainless steel is made primarily of iron, with a minimum of 10.5% chromium. The Cr will form a passive layer on the surface of the steel, which protects against corrosion. Besides Cr, other elements may be added to satin stainless steel to improve its corrosion resistance. For example, Ni and Mo can be added to enhance the resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, which are types of localized corrosion that can occur in specific environments. In terms of processing, the mechanical or satin finishing process used to create the brushed finish on the steel can help to remove surface imperfections and contaminants that could contribute to corrosion.

2.Strength
Satin stainless steel is a strong material with high tensile and yield strength. It can withstand heavy loads and impacts without deformation.

3.Hygiene
Satin stainless steel is easy to clean and maintain, making it a popular choice in the food and medical industries. It is also resistant to bacterial growth, making it a hygienic material.

4.Aesthetic Appeal
Satin stainless steel has a sleek and modern appearance that complements many design styles. Its brushed finish gives it a unique texture and helps to hide fingerprints and smudges.

5.Durability
Satin stainless steel is a durable material that withstands harsh environments and extreme temperatures. It is resistant to scratches and abrasions, making it ideal for high-traffic areas.

Overall, satin stainless steel is a versatile material that combines high strength, excellent durability, corrosion resistance, and aesthetic appeal, making it a popular choice for various applications.

Stainless Steel:
Stainless steel requires little repair, but daily touch will leave fingerprints and grease on its surface. TOPSON recommends using Invisible Glass Detergent to clean and Microfiber Cloth to wipe the surface for daily cleaning of satin stainless steel.

Dawn® and Sprayway® brand glass cleaners may be used to clean stainless steel routinely. If your stainless steel is carelessly tea-staining, Krud Kutter® cleaner can help you.

Brightness and smoothness can affect the aesthetic. You can use a soft cloth dipped in ordinary household white vinegar to maintain it with occasional polishing. Unique polishing product, like Sprayway® or 3M®, is also a good option to regain the brightness of stainless steel.

Copper:
Satin copper is one of the most popular decorative materials. The reason copper with corrosion resistance is the patina developed on its surface. Patina is the main factor affecting its color, so you must choose cleaners correctly to avoid damage during cleaning.

Wright’s® Copper Cream is gentle and non-abrasive. Its solid protective performance keeps your copper beautiful for years to come.

Flitz® Brass & Copper Tarnish Remover adopts non-flammable formula, safer than traditional acid-based cleaners. Just spray and rinse to quickly restore a brilliant shine without rubbing.

Aluminum:
Aluminum is more easily oxidized than iron but is often used for decoration. Why? The reason is that aluminum products will form a layer of aluminum oxide on the surface to avoid further corrosion. *Can not use acidic or alkaline cleaners. If do that, you will destroy its oxide and lose its protection.

In daily maintenance, mild soap solution is one of the best choices to clean aluminum without damaging the finish. You also can use commercial aluminum cleaners to maintain the materials’ sheen.

Mothers® Mag & Aluminum Polish is a paste that adds a protective coating to aluminum surfaces. You can use it by hand or with a microfiber cloth.

Chemical Guys® Heavy Metal Polish can remove light rust stains from aluminum surfaces. It is suitable to restore aluminum’s sheen.

3D® Superior Metal Polish is one of the best cleaners to remove tough or heavy-duty dirt with little effort. It can restore shine even after long-term corrosion.
