Satin Finish Stainless Steel

Satin is the most popular polishing finish, especially for 304 stainless steel and 201 stainless steel. Similar to the #4 finish, the satin finish has a smooth appearance and a grain of short, parallel lines. Their difference is the coarseness of the grain. The #4 finish is brighter than the satin finish, and the grain is fine, giving it a soft matte effect. On the other hand, the satin finish has a coarser grain and a dark matte effect and is not as glossy as the #4 finish.

How to Get A Satin Finish on Stainless Steel

Satin finish is usually achieved by polishing machine or by hand polishing. It is usually achieved by sanding in a single direction using a sanding belt, abrasive, or brush to create a uniform linear texture. The polishing machine is divided into coiling polishing and plate polishing. At Topson, we have two production lines that can adjust the processing method according to customers’ requirements.

Methods of Polishing Satin Finish

There are two methods of satin polishing: wet polishing and dry polishing. In general, wet polishing produces a glossier surface than dry polishing. During wet polishing, the metal materials will be cleaned many times (at least 4 times) to remove the stains and iron filings generated during the processing to the greatest extent possible.

Steps to Producing Satin Finish

Besides stainless steel, satin finish is available on other metals, including aluminum, brass, and zinc.

Mechanical Polishing Machine

The primary method of producing satin-finish stainless steel in volume is using mechanical polishing equipment to form a uniform linear texture on the stainless steel surface.

Steps:

  • 1. Clean the stainless steel surface to ensure no oil, dust, or impurities. (this step will involve the use of chemicals, water, and polishing rollers)
  • 2. Abrasives with particle sizes between 120 and 240 grit are usually selected using abrasive belts.
  • 3. Start the device and polish the surface evenly in a single direction to form a linear texture. Control the polishing pressure and speed to ensure a uniform texture.
  • 4. Remove residual metal chips and dust with compressed air or water from the surface.
  • 5. Finally, the film is sealed. This allows us to process from 2B/BA to a Satin finish.

The whole process involves 4-5 cleanings. Besides satin finish, this process is suitable for producing the #4 finish and hairline finish.

Hand Polishing

For small areas or irregular shapes of stainless steel, manual polishing can be used.

Steps:

  • 1. Clean stainless steel surface to ensure no oil and impurities.
  • 2. Choose a suitable sandpaper or brushed wheels (usually 120-240 grit).
  • 3. Sand the surface evenly in a single direction to create a linear texture.
  • 4. At last, wipe the surface with a clean cloth to remove residual metal shavings.

Satin Finish Use Cases

As the most popular surface treatment, satin finish is widely used across a number of industries, especially industries that use stainless steel for various use cases. For example, elevators and escalators for trim, railings, walls, and more; architecture for wall cladding, ceilings, and more.
