Bead Blasted Stainless Steel Sheet

Bead-blasted stainless steel is a type of stainless steel that has a matte, non-reflective finish that is achieved through a process called bead blasting. This finish is often called a “satin finish,” but it is not the same as the brushed finish of satin stainless steel.

Bead blasting is a surface finishing process adopting a high-pressured tool to shoot various blast media onto the metal surface. This process creates a uniform and matte finish on the surface of the stainless steel by removing any surface imperfections and creating a texture that diffuses light.

It is a finishing process to improve the aesthetics or functionality. By bead blasting, high adhesion will be obtained when the metal surface needs painting.

At TOPSON, our bead blasted finishing can be applied to metals such as stainless steel, aluminium, copper, steel, and titanium. Bead blasted finish, reffered as diffuse finish or sandblasted finish, has a matte and soft surface which can create a diffusing effect in the light. It can be used as a stand-along finish or combining with other patterns. The quality of bead-blasting metal depends on processing equipment, craftsmanship, and expertise. It is an ideal for architectural and other applications where a visually consistent finish is required.

Long Service Life

Stainless steel surface has a naturally occurring protective coat – a passive film that protects the material from corrosion. Stainless steel contains chromium. When exposed to air, Cr will react with oxygen to form a thin film (passive film), which imparts corrosion resistance to stainless steel. The natural passivation coating has excellent stability and strong repairability, and can be quickly reformed when damaged.

This naturally occurring passive film may weaken once the bead blasting is applied. After bead blasting, TOPSON will apply an additional passivation film that keeps the surface finish longer.

Multiple Processing Types

TOPSON has three types of bead blasting to meet your finishing requirement: automated (wheel) blasting, air blasting, and water blasting. Each type can accommodate various abrasive media, media quantity and sizes to achieve a wide range of textures. Our quality control experts can control the texture’s fineness by adjusting the abrasive’s grit size.

In automatic blasting, the blasting medium is placed on a rotating wheel, which is propelled against the target object using electricity. Air blasting relies on compressed air to blast target objects. Water blasting uses high-pressure water flow to transport the blasting medium.

In addition, blasting speed, intensity and distance will also affect the quality of the bead-blasted finish. Therefore, it is best performed by experienced specialists.

Bead blasting is a finishing process that manages the surface of various objects. Bead blasting is one type of it that can be applied to texturize metal, plastic, or glass. Bead blasting is a finishing process in which spheroid abrasive materials are blasted at high pressure against a surface. As the final step of metal finishing, it can remove rust, paint, or other debris from metal surfaces to create a smooth and anti-scratched appearance. The metal materials used for bead-blasted finish are stainless steel, aluminum, copper, steel, Ti, etc.

Bead-blasted stainless steel has high dirt resistance and scratch resistance. Compared with rubber or glass, it is stronger and more fire-resistant. Not only that, the bead blasted textures also have various applications. Coarser finishes can hide scratches greatly or deburr. Smoother finishes are used to improve slipperiness.

For metals, bead blasting is good for removing paint coating or as a surface finish to improve paint coating adhesion. There are 5 advantages of bead-blasted stainless steel:

* Rich in color. Bead blasting will result in a brighter and colorful surface without changing the original color of the metal.
* Recyclable. The abrasive materials can be recycled before needing replacement. In addition, waste abrasives can be recycled and remelted to form new abrasives.
* Easy to maintain. Dust, dirt and grit can be wiped off with a microfibre cloth.
* Good workability. Bead blasted finish can combine with other metal finishes to form a unique surface, like colored or mirror metal materials.
* Fire resistance & breakage-proof. The melting point of the metal is generally over 600 degrees.
* Eco-friendly. Besides metal itself can be recycled, glass beads for bead blasting are made from lead-free and soda-lime glass that doesn’t leave harmful residue in the water supply.

Common bead blasting mediums include metal, walnut shells, glass, zirconia, alumina, and sand. They will leave different textures. The walnut shells can be used for cleaning and stripping without damage. The ceramic medium tends to leave greater impressions. And the metal shot or glass medium leads to smoother surfaces.

The common bead-blasted medium used for metal finishing is stainless steel shot, glass beads, zirconia, sand, and aluminium oxide.

* Aluminium oxide. A substance made from bauxite to smelt aluminium, commonly used in abrasives, refractories, and ceramics.
* Zirconia or zirconium dioxide. It is a zirconium-based ceramic blasting medium that is more elastic than glass.

The answer is positive. Bead blasting is a versatile finish that can be applied to stainless steel, Ti, aluminum, copper, steel, and brass.

Stainless Steel:
Stainless steel requires little repair, but daily touch will leave fingerprints and grease on its surface. TOPSON recommends using Invisible Glass Detergent to clean and Microfiber Cloth to wipe the surface for daily cleaning of bead-blasted stainless steel.

Dawn® and Sprayway® brand glass cleaners may be used to clean stainless steel routinely. If your stainless steel is carelessly tea-staining, Krud Kutter® cleaner can help you.

Brightness and smoothness can affect the aesthetic. You can use a soft cloth dipped in ordinary household white vinegar to maintain it with occasional polishing. Unique polishing product, like Sprayway® or 3M®, is also a good option to regain the brightness of stainless steel.

Copper:
Copper is one of the most popular decorative materials. The reason copper with corrosion resistance is the patina developed on its surface. Patina is the main factor affecting its color, so you must choose cleaners correctly to avoid damage during cleaning.

Wright’s® Copper Cream is gentle and non-abrasive. Its solid protective performance keeps your copper beautiful for years to come.

Flitz® Brass & Copper Tarnish Remover adopts non-flammable formula, safer than traditional acid-based cleaners. Just spray and rinse to quickly restore a brilliant shine without rubbing.

Aluminum:
Aluminum is more easily oxidized than iron but is often used for decoration. Why? The reason is that aluminum products will form a layer of aluminum oxide on the surface to avoid further corrosion. *Can not use acidic or alkaline cleaners. If do that, you will destroy its oxide and lose its protection.

In daily maintenance, mild soap solution is one of the best choices to clean aluminum without damaging the finish. You also can use commercial aluminum cleaners to maintain the materials’ sheen.
Mothers® Mag & Aluminum Polish is a paste that adds a protective coating to aluminum surfaces. You can use it by hand or with a microfiber cloth.

Chemical Guys® Heavy Metal Polish can remove light rust stains from aluminum surfaces. It is suitable to restore aluminum’s sheen.
